Women’s MMA in the North East & Beyond!
From Erin Cooney

Hey guys! Just want to introduce myself and what I’m going to be doing with NorthEastMMA! My name is Erin Cooney, and Old School has brought me on board to talk about the ladies of local MMA! For a while now I have been following NorthEastMMA.net and have always wondered why there was no mention of women in the sport. I started training about a year ago and instantly fell in love! Hoping to set up a fight sometime soon, I took to the internet to help me find some local gals at 115. And as you guessed it, I found nothing. It’s hard enough to match girls with the unfortunately small numbers of fighters but the lack of accessible information makes it even harder. Thanks to Old School, I will be releasing monthly articles and bios about both local fighters and their gyms, along with professional woman fighters as well.
Today, thanks to promotions like the UFC and Strikeforce, mixed martial arts is the fastest growing sport out there! We all know that MMA has the reputation for being a male dominated sport. It goes back to the caveman days, when men fought to survive! (Survival of the fittest!) It was seen as masculine to duke it out and fight like warriors. Needless to say, women entering this sport today are sometimes met with some resistance and skepticism. I am no feminist but times have changed boys, girls can fight too! With the involvement of women in Strikeforce, the number of women in the sport has skyrocketed! Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, Gina Carano, and many other badass babes have introduced women’s MMA with style. These brawling beauties are tough as nails and have proven to young girls and women everywhere, that women too belong in the cage. Now enough of me blabbing. The next time you hear from me I will be profiling a local fighter by the name of Peggy Morgan!

Keep training, and FIGHT LIKE A GIRL! ;)

  6. Bill Mahoney on November 9th, 2012 1:42 PM

Don’t think she’s a newb with just a year training guys. She trained 350 days that year averaging maybe 4 hours a day at the gym.
She must b part Brazilian. But it’s worth it to hear the other coaches cry about sandbagging as she dominates the intermediate division(2-5 years experience) at NAGA and Grapplers Quest when technically she should still b in beginner.
I’ll make sure half the gym comes here to bust your balls lady

  7. Bill Mahoney on November 9th, 2012 1:44 PM

Maybe u shoulda been the road warrior tho. As much as u make it to Lauzons &CCFA

^Nice way to ruin a thread that was full of respect. You’re a class act, I must say.

  11. om on November 10th, 2012 3:36 PM

uncle sam…i donnot agree with you…dan is a very good fighter but why should he or you call out matt…i thought dan would start stepping out of new england and fighting the best he could find in preparation for a move to the ufc…i donnot think matt is that fighter but there are a bunch of fighters on the east coast who would make give dan the test he needs…matt is real good also but dan needs to fight someone even better than matt…do you understand uncle sam…and bye the way i cannot remember a boring fight that matt was in…

  12. loco lobo on November 10th, 2012 4:46 PM

  15. Anonymous on November 11th, 2012 11:47 AM

Sanbagging BECAUSE I witnessed her run through the girls at NAGA, then compete in grapplers quest at beginner again and not even give the other girls a chance, with still not even a stripe on her white belt after a year. She is good, and talented no doubt so it doesn’t matter how many years of experience she has, she should be competing at her level. Again I don’t think it was intentional but got the other coaches mad because their beginner students didn’t even get a chance.

  16. Anonymous on November 11th, 2012 11:54 AM

It’s ok… She competed at beginner then posted a pic of herself wearing a blue belt… Hmmm beginner that’s been wrestling for how long??

  17. LOCO LOBO on November 11th, 2012 2:48 PM

  18. Anonymous on November 11th, 2012 7:22 PM

At least she doesn’t have a penis like ‘The Cyborg’. Maybe that’s why they call her the ‘Cyborg’, because she’s a Transformer, because she has a penis in disquise. If I was in Bassett shoes I’d nut up and fight Dany. Maybe that’s why “Uncle Sam” mentioned it?

  19. A. Mills on November 11th, 2012 8:05 PM

Haha funny because I train with her daily and have also been to the competitions and witnessed her TALENT. Most honest girl you will ever meet! Your right the GI is blue, the belt is not. The two are very similar… I can see where it may have been a bit confusing…

  20. Bill Mahoney on November 11th, 2012 9:36 PM

She WAS a beginner dumbass. And she isnt a blue belt. It’s a Sambo Kurtka she’s wearing. In Sambo belts come in 2 colors. And they ain’t awarded. She had a few months training when smashed u. And still is a white belt. Don’t blame Erin. Blame your instructor that u still suck after 2x that time training. But I agree on 1 thing. She had maybe 5 months training yet still the gals at Grapplers quest had no chance. Even the 220 babes in open weight.
Don’t b a hater. BJ Penn was a world jiujitsu blackbelt champ after 4 yrs.
It’s pretty cool when she’s accused of sandbagging tho so as her trainer Thanx a bunch !
In fact while she still coulda done beginner at NAGA I talked her into doing Intermediate and she won the 2-5 Yr division the same way.
Yup, while a beginner with zero previous grappling training. She legit had no idea what guard or even grappling was when she joined. She came for cardio kickboxing . I said “u r athletic. U should grapple” she said “what’s grappling?”
Couple months later, shes a champ. We do that alot here.
Find a new team and u won’t find it so shocking cause our secret training methods… NO CAN DEFEND!!
even as a beginner winning intermediate I hear “sand bagged”… U can’t win w the fight nerds. sheesh!

  21. Scary Nickname on November 11th, 2012 9:40 PM

Like Coach Bill said, she’s been putting in work like crazy. She hasnt been grappling long but has been training with monsters on the mat. She’s gonna be a big deal very soon.

Bill, I thought she was fighting at Cage Titans the other night when I saw you guys in the cage working out before the fights. I guess she just practices anytime she can get on the mats.

She’s far better looking than Loco Lobo is, thats for sure.

  22. loco lobo on November 11th, 2012 10:08 PM

You can say that again Naderhood !!

  23. Bill Mahoney on November 11th, 2012 10:14 PM

I dunno. Loco has his charm. Kind of a Clint Eastwood thing. I’d hit that! Were I a gal mean of course.
Your 1st cage fight like your first grappling tourney as we all know is really scary. Way way worse than a mere streetfight. And I’ve seen nerves alone keep great fighters from going anywhere.
It’s very hard to limit the affects of nerves but I figured getting in the cage at a show in front of a 100 or so strangers can’t hurt. Even if it’s months from fighting.
Plus I wanted to look cool by slamming a 120 lbs girl around the cage.
I pretend I’m big John Studd beating on Tony Atlas back in the days wrestling was still cool and I’m pretty sure was 100% real. I heard that somewhere.
    She may compete soon.
But only after she goes back down to novice and crushes over matched girls.
Just to piss people off and let em know that we r rebels that don’t play by the rules!!
And we take no sh#t from the man!!
Dont be shocked if we do that I’m kinda the ultimate sandbagger! I beat up on John Downey although every knows I’m 100-3 in MMA. 10-4 in death matches and have world titles in 16 martial arts.
That and cause I’m UFC level!! (UFC 2 level to b exact)

  24. loco lobo on November 11th, 2012 11:21 PM

Hehehehehe !! Wheres Rebello when you need him ??

  25. Bill Mahoney on November 12th, 2012 10:58 AM

Yeah. I figured anonymous would have nothing to say. But seriously lady, it ain’t that Erins more skilled than u. It’s that we at SSS put our athletes on a proper strength&conditioning program.
In the 1st 6 months Erins lower body strength went up 40%. And her upper body strength exploded up 200% til she was clean benching with no spotted 30+lbs over her weight. Rare for a woman.
U most likely do all your conditioning with the antiquated common bodyweight stuff that’s done at the beginning of most BJJ classes, which actually decreases the explosiveness needed for competition (and it’s been proven that the old BJJ idea that it’s best to get tired and then train so as to b less reliant on power. Which is not only just silly because if the other guy gased before rolling doing the same exercises then strength differences will hold equally steady(approximately).
But it’s been proven that ones neuro pathways r MUCH more susceptible to developing paths to learning when one is well rested.
A tired mind doesnt learn even physical lessons well.
And furthermore endurance muscle is not as beneficial to develop as explosive muscle.
At least as far as if the person in question already trains muscular endurance simply by rolling alot.
U are training what u are already developing by nature of the sport. And it programs the body to go distance which is great but it does so of actually eroding explosive power.
So in short, she crushed u because u are a poor athlete because u are weak.
All the skill in the world woudnt have saved u. U were generally attempting to do the correct things and correctly.
U were just overpowered. As Erin over powers most the ladies she faces who are around 118. Cause few lift, and fewer still lift correctly. The lift to increase they endurance the heavy when powerlifting would b more beneficial.
Sry to any athletic sciencetists out there for wording it so poorly. But I hope u can see the
Merit of what I’m trying to say.
Same as with even my kids that compete. We train strength. And often u can see a wild difference in power levels in even beginner NAGA divisions.
So all kidding aside lady. There’s no hard feelings and I’d love u to visit SSS in Norwell where we have many gals of all sizes that grapple who crave more sparring partners. Come train and ask Erin about our program and institute it in your own training and expect to kick ass. And while here u will find all the gals and Erin especially r super respectful(cept me most the time)and I assure u would never hold a grudge and grapple with ego. We go very easy here. U are required to tap out regularly here regardless of your level.
When u are far more advanced u put yourselves in subs and bad positions and attempt to work your way out. It’s the most beneficial way to spar in that case. For both students.
No charge. If u got more questions ask Erin,me or the SSS(Scotts) in a message to our Facebook page.
Until then good luck with training but get used to being Royce Gracie facing Matt Hughes because what happened shall keep happening to u if u don’t adapt.
    Evolve or die

  26. locol lobo on November 12th, 2012 11:36 AM

Well put Master Mahoney , and girls can be so silly ! I have trained with Erin a few times and not only is she talented but she is very humble and coachable ….. UNLIKE ME !!

  27. Anonymous on November 12th, 2012 4:46 PM

I have nothing to say because you sound ignorant. I have never fought Erin in a grappling match, like I said just witnessed it. I can bench my body weight plus 30 lbs, squat 220 and dead lift 220, and know all about strength and conditioning, I don’t know, maybe I even do that for a living? And I’m a GREAT athlete, thank you very much. I did not, however see her compete at intermediate and if she smashed those girls too I believe it, Good for her. Like I said I didn’t think it was intentional. And thanks for the offer, but no thanks, I train with the masters. Think twice before you ridicule other gyms or I can just sit back and watch another one of our guys run yours into the ground.

  28. Bill Mahoney on November 12th, 2012 6:01 PM

I got “nothing to say” too.
    So here goes…
Frankly if u are a trainer and squat and deadlift 220… Well do I need to say it?
I know 100% who u are Missy. You’re the one that doesn’t know how to lost gracefully.
But I tell u what… In the spirit of goodwill and competition I invite u to my gym. If u bench 30 more than your body weight I give u 500$ cash right there.
Words r easy to say. Make up all the lies u want.
    But it’s actions that speak.
Or u may stay a coward not signing posts. U know that I know who u are. But let’s here u say it. Is your instructor aware u talk sh@t and make outrageous claims?
Name your teams top 10 fighters. If u don’t wanna post it send it privatly. I’ll tell no one I’ll merely ask to set up fights. And zero will happen. U know why?
Slavery ended with the civil war. U really don’t need to call anyone your master.
It makes u look pathetic to call a man your master.
Cut the calories lose your big ass and u will maybe gain some self worth and call no one your master.
Here’s another idea. U swing by and we have a powelifting meet tween u and a gal of mine and if she don’t beat u by a total of 175lbs + then Ill hand u a grand right there.
But nice job diverting the topic so as to get away from your accusations now that they’ve been answered and shown to be 100% groundless.
Next time u get crushed do yourself a favor and apologies for being that c-word again.
Maybe people won’t dislike u so much.
PS Now go keep calling some guy “Master” cause he can beat u up. Brilliant.
They sell bs trainers certificates on the web. I had 2 until I wiped my ass with em and flushed with my karate blackbelt

    U swing by and

  29. Anonymous on November 12th, 2012 7:08 PM

That’s a very respectful way to speak as a gym owner. And people are supposed to respect you??? The girl is speaking her mind… You need to relax and calm down… She obviously respects her trainer enough to be called a master maybe one day you will gain enough respect and be called the same. Your supposed to be a role model and people are supposed to look up to you and your calling her fat… Your nothing but a disgrace and a bully and a jerk in my eyes.

  30. Bill Mahoney on November 12th, 2012 7:52 PM

    Oh yeah?
Ok I admit I’m a bully. But I only bully A-holes and only after they’ve ripped on undeserving people. But even then only after I’ve proven them wrong and they haven’t offered an apology.
    I admit mistakes.
Like here, I often overreact in defending the innocent.
I can admit this flaw. So why can’t u?
That u accused someone of sandbagging and were mistaken. And as a coward u did it anonymously?
Just admit it! It’s good for the soul!

And yup… People DO look up to me. I pretty much got a whole cult of people idolizing me. (I know! It scares me too!!! But I digress…
    Back to admissions..

Btw I kinda thought u may punch me at NAGA for ripping your woman when she behaved like an uolnsportsmanlike C-word!!
U should’ve. I’d have been cool about it. I deserve it. Not for calling someone fat tho. That’s my way of trying to inspire them.
But then I saw that u are sort of a midget and vibed that u wouldn’t b punching anyone ever!
Actually I’m impressed and surprised u even got a woman. At a glance one would assume u play for the other team! But no hate… I get that too being pretty as I am!

And admit your mom made a mistake in not aborting u!!
Speaking of your mom… Someone already callse master!!
    Boo-yeah!!! I went there!! It’s on now!!

  31. Ring Boy on November 12th, 2012 8:07 PM

Abortion is probably the most awful thing you can do in this life. And to say that someone should have been aborted is totally classless. Grow up.

  32. Bill Mahoney on November 12th, 2012 11:25 PM

  33. Ryan White on November 12th, 2012 11:58 PM

Just to open up–Erin Cooney is one of the hardest working people I’ve ever had the joy of training with. She had zero experience when she began at South Shore Sportfighting, and no, as she was accused of earlier, she never wrestled either. She simply worked INCREDIBLY hard. Not only is she eager to learn, but she lives the lifestyle of an athlete which many don’t (90% of the time myself included…but I’m working on it dammit!). She earned every one of the awards she got.

Also, ‘Anonymous’ didn’t refer to her ‘Masters’ as such to show them respect, she did as an indirect insult to Bill. She said she trains with ‘The Masters’ as if to say that Bill isn’t. I should point out that Mike Gresh, one of the most respected members of the community, on this thread, referred to Bill as a Master. Granted, if you asked Bill sincerely if he is, he’d tell you he wasn’t, though he’s more deserving of the title than most. It’s assinine to call someone a master of an art as progressive and ever-changing as fighting/BJJ (and yes they’re different things).

Bitching and accusing people of sandbagging simply makes you look petty. Then trying to brag about accomplishments makes you look insecure, you know, kind of like not using your actual name to post.

  34. Robert on November 13th, 2012 1:00 AM

How does bill sound ignorant that man hias been trying killers 4 years grispi metcalf stone sforza 2 name a few that’s very impressive any 1s strength to go up that much @ SSS they train u the right way n r the nicest fucking coaches so anonymous grow some balls n say who u r!! But it don’t matter SSS will have another champion n this time it will b a women. Mark my wards n bill ur a savage was upset @ ur Downey fight tap that pussy out wit out even throwing a punch. Wanted 2 c u punch his head in but I guess that’s how it goes when sum 1 is afraid to stand wit u good stuff man!!

  35. Anonymous on November 13th, 2012 10:34 AM

You guys are all retarded… Bill doesn’t sound ignorant?! He calls women fat and cunts and then attacks their boyfriends then continues to say her mother should of aborted her… He doesn’t even know who he’s speaking too… I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t want anyone speaking to his wife or daughters like that of he has them… So ya he is a immature disrespectful piece of shit and it will be sure to let him know this to his face.

  36. Ryan White on November 13th, 2012 11:03 AM

Then why not educate us as to who we’re talking to?

  37. Bill Mahoney on November 13th, 2012 11:08 AM

I know exactly who u are. U wanna make a bet?? It’s obvious. U make the same points u did last time.
    Yeah I’m childish and mean.
But ONLY childish and mean to bully’s. And YOU are the Bully! Twice now attacking on the Internet.
And see I can talk about my team. It’s mine. U tho get into a fight with me and say how your team is real and u got masters blah.
Would love to hear what your instructor would say if I told him u were ripping my team and bragging bout yours. Keep pushing it and u will. I think he will react in a VERY different way than u think he would and u would regret it.
If u don’t like me being a bully..
    Stop starting with me.
In both these cases u attacked me and got all pissy when u couldn’t handle what u started.
And u really really will bring it up to me in person??
Here’s an even a better idea. I’ll bring it up to u. Cause u won’t in a million years.
    NAGA not long away.
I’ll ask u to b man and let’s settle it in person just u and me.
We walk outside , find a spot and do so.
Go easy dude. Cause I really really will. I’m not all talk like u, won’t punch u. I ain’t a violent guy. I’m too old to start trouble by a decade plus. I just think people should stand behind their posts. I won’t yell n scream or nothing. But I will make u cry just alittle. And I’m not above saying exactly what your woman is eye to eye so b ready how u will react to that. Or just leave me alone on line. Your call.
Or do u still have hope u are anonymous. If do, read real close. I’ve pushed a couple buttons I wouldn’t have know to if I didn’t know. But u gotta pay attention

what the hell was that i just read…lol…

  40. BaggageCheck on November 13th, 2012 4:52 PM

    is cyborg a transformer?

  41. Bill Mahoney on November 13th, 2012 10:30 PM

I got a decent joking response to the Cyborg statement. But I can’t in good conscience mock any female fighter .. Local or even world class like Cyborg on Erins threads here. Which r designed to promote womans MMA.
There r 2 few woman fighters in New England. So few the very talented Peggy Morgans don’t have enough gals to fight.
So I hope we can talk Womans MMA now.
I know my dozens of female students… Even my gals who r only taking the cardio type classes r all excited when there’s a single woman fight on local cards.
I really think local promotions r missing the boat and lots of $ by not pushing harder to get woman fights on shows.
Even if it didn’t sell extra tickets that show. The gals that go will have a better time and b more likely to get tickets for the next show. And a few of the men will too.
I’ve heard a promoter say that with few female MMA fighters in these parts that it’d b too hard to find late replacement fighters should one of the woman have to pull out of the scheduled fight.
He claims this is the reason he doesn’t put on woman fights.
    Could this be true?
What schools around Massachusetts are and aren’t training woman fighters?I know I’ve opened up a whole new market by having Erin run female only classes. I hope we aren’t unique in that. But I’d love to know which schools if any are presently training woman that do.. Or will one day get in the cage?
I ask this hoping to prove this promoter wrong

  42. Kerrigan on November 13th, 2012 11:04 PM

I dont know Mahoney personally, but I have always respected SSSF’s fighters. I now know a few guys who train there and they say good things about Bill. When I first read some of his posts I decided he was a dick, but I had to admit there was at least a germ of truth (and a whole lot of sarcasm) in every one of his posts. Now I look forward to them and the longer the better. Old School, can you get him a regular column on here? If necessary I’ll bust his balls anonymously to provoke some “internet gold”!

  43. BaggageCheck on November 14th, 2012 1:03 PM

World-Class? She tested positive for steriods, you (Bill M)forgot to mention that!I was thinking maybe it wasn’t steriods she was on, but her balls descended, and it was all natural (test results)for a guy, but high for a lady. After all in Brazil there is alot of transgenders, so giving her a baggage check rather than a blood test makes more sense.
