Women’s MMA in the North East & Beyond!
From Erin Cooney
Hey guys! Just want to introduce myself and what I’m going to be doing with NorthEastMMA! My name is Erin Cooney, and Old School has brought me on board to talk about the ladies of local MMA! For a while now I have been following NorthEastMMA.net and have always wondered why there was no mention of women in the sport. I started training about a year ago and instantly fell in love! Hoping to set up a fight sometime soon, I took to the internet to help me find some local gals at 115. And as you guessed it, I found nothing. It’s hard enough to match girls with the unfortunately small numbers of fighters but the lack of accessible information makes it even harder. Thanks to Old School, I will be releasing monthly articles and bios about both local fighters and their gyms, along with professional woman fighters as well.
Today, thanks to promotions like the UFC and Strikeforce, mixed martial arts is the fastest growing sport out there! We all know that MMA has the reputation for being a male dominated sport. It goes back to the caveman days, when men fought to survive! (Survival of the fittest!) It was seen as masculine to duke it out and fight like warriors. Needless to say, women entering this sport today are sometimes met with some resistance and skepticism. I am no feminist but times have changed boys, girls can fight too! With the involvement of women in Strikeforce, the number of women in the sport has skyrocketed! Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, Gina Carano, and many other badass babes have introduced women’s MMA with style. These brawling beauties are tough as nails and have proven to young girls and women everywhere, that women too belong in the cage. Now enough of me blabbing. The next time you hear from me I will be profiling a local fighter by the name of Peggy Morgan!
Keep training, and FIGHT LIKE A GIRL!
